Robotic Copycat Arm promises to taunt you with ease

Robotic Copycat Arm promises to taunt you with ease
While mind-control interfaces are all well and good, sometimes a simpler solution makes a bit more sense, and that's where this so-called Copycat Arm comes in. Developed by a group of researchers at the University of Tsukub, it makes use of a high-speed camera to monitor a person's movements, which are apparently instantly (and creepily) mimicked by the robot arm.Eventually, the researchers say the same system could be used as a computer interface, which they say could eliminate the need for a mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a video of the arm in action, but those heading to SIGGRAPH 2008 will apparently be able to check it out first hand.

Man uses Wii Balance Board to control robot, takes aim at Segway next

Man uses Wii Balance Board to control robot, takes aim at Segway next

It may never garner quite the same broad appeal among DIYers as the incredibly versatile Wiimote, but it looks like the Wii Balance Board is nonetheless spurring on some hackery of its own, including being used as a navigation device for Google Earth and World of Warcraft. While those hacks are certainly impressive enough, the board has only just recently fully earned its DIY cred by being used to control a robot, which you can see in action after the break. What's more, the man responsible for that hack, Juan González, isn't about to rest on his laurels, with him now promising to create a Segway-like device that's controlled simply using the Wii Balance Board. Needless to say, we'll be keeping an eye out for any progress on that one.

    Nokia Wireless Keyboard Review

    clipped from witsie.blogspot.com
The Nokia SU-8W Wireless Keyboard has turned out to be an excellent purchase and has proved its usefulness already. The keyboard is well built, feels solid and is well designed. Its key response is good and it works well with my 6680. It is also well priced here in South Africa and comfortably competes with other wireless keyboards (R780 approx).
    The Nokia Wireless Keyboard (SU-8W)...
If you have a compatible smartphone, I can only recommend this keyboard. It makes all sorts of tasks much easier and provides much simpler text entry on the device. Whether it is for typing quick documents or notes, sending e-mails, using PuTTY or FTP on remote systems or programming using Python the keyboard is great.
By the way this review was written using the keyboard in some of my rare free time at Wits :)

Shoot on Overcast Days for Better Black and White Photos

bw_shot.jpgThe Wired How-To Wiki looks through the loupe at black and white photography, offering up tips for consumer-grade camera owners on how to take shots that look great converted to black and white. When other pictures look dull and dreary, for instance, black and white shots can pop, with the right focus:

Most photographers will tell you that gloomy, overcast days are perfect for shooting in black and white. So the next time the fog rolls in or the clouds hang a little too low, take it as your cue to get creative with the shades of gray.

That also means watching for overbearing shadows or highlights, as the wiki points out. How do you make your shots turn out best in shades of gray? Share your secrets in the comments. Photo by twenty questions.
